*Serena — I need to think about this before I do anything. Can I ask you one more question. On the file-history screenshot, is 'R.ELLISO' the user ID as it appears, or is it truncated?*

The reply came back at 10:12 pm.

*As it appears. Full ID. R.ELLISO. Not RobertEllison, not REllisonSr. Just R.ELLISO. It doesn't match any current staff ID format. It's an old format. Two letters, dot, last name truncated to six. We switched formats four years ago. So that ID hasn't been in use since before I got here, and probably not since before Renata got here.*

*Thank you.*

*Ms. Ellison — are you okay?*

*Yeah.*

*Okay. If you need me to do anything else, text me. I'll be at my desk at 8.*

Mara closed the laptop and walked out onto the small concrete balcony above the garage and stood looking at the street.

She went back inside and called her father.

It was 10:34 on Monday night. He answered on the fourth ring.

"Mara."

"Dad. I need to ask you a question and I need you to answer it without asking me why."

A pause. "Okay."

"Did you ever have a login at the club?"

Silence.

"Dad."

"I don't know what you mean," he said.
